Reading Eagle Question

The only candidate for Hamburg Mayor to respond - me!

This is my answer to the questionnaire in the Reading Eagle:

Name a single problem facing the municipality you are running to represent and how you would address that issue if elected.

One of the most pressing issues facing Hamburg is our shrinking tax base, which threatens future growth and prosperity. With very limited undeveloped land remaining, smart redevelopment is critical. Unfortunately, reduced property assessments for major businesses have cut into our tax revenue, and we missed a key opportunity by not redeveloping the old Exide property. The tax burden is then shifted onto older and more vulnerable residents- a unsustainable model for future growth. While traditional industry may not return, our ideal location and natural assets make us a strong destination for recreation and tourism. That’s why I strongly support completing the Schuylkill River Trail—it will draw more visitors to shop, dine, and stay in Hamburg.

To address regional growth challenges, we should explore joint zoning and collaborate with neighboring communities on shared services like police, fire, and EMS. We must also be more proactive in securing state and federal grants to fund essential infrastructure improvements. As your Mayor, I’ll work to strengthen our economy, attract new investment, and ensure Hamburg thrives for generations to come. Visit holmesformayor.com for more information.
